5 Easy Tips for Updating Your Wardrobe on a Budget

Do you ever feel like you have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear?

Read more to understand why this may be a problem for you and learn how to shop smart so you can spend less and enjoy what you have!

1. Gathering Inspiration

Looking at outfit ideas from fellow bloggers, fashion magazines or Pinterest can allow you to view what you currently own through a refreshed lens. I prefer online media, because I can easily search the clothing piece I want to style. For example, if I don't know what to pair with my denim shirt, I search "styling denim shirt" or "denim shirt outfit ideas" on Google or Pinterest. I like to do this when I find I have a few neglected pieces hanging in my closet that haven't been worn in a long time. Also, finding a few fashion bloggers to follow (like me!) for continuous fashion inspiration can be helpful. You may get inspired by clothing you already have hanging in your closet because you never thought to style that piece of clothing in that particular way.

Some of my favorite fashion bloggers are:

2. Invest in Transitional Pieces

Instead of going out and buying a complete new wardrobe every season change, build on what you currently have by adding timeless pieces that can carry you through multiple seasons. For example, a trench coat can be used to layer in the fall but can also be draped over the shoulders during the Spring and Summer months.

A few of my favourite transitional pieces:

3. Quality Over Quantity

If I've learned anything from my years of shopping, it's that the bag or pair of shoes that I spent a little bit more of money on (but go with everything), are worth the splurge! Not only do they last for many years, they can really elevate the chicness of an outfit. I bought my first Chanel bag when I was 18 years old, working four jobs. Eight years later, I still love it, wear it and feel fab with it! I've definitely got my money's worth out of it and because I've taken care of it, it still looks brand new!

4. Be Thrifty

If you're really on a budget or don't want to spend too much money, check out some of the local thrift stores and consignment shops in your area, or join an online buy and sell community. You never know what hidden treasures await you. Sometimes you can even find high-end pieces for a fraction of the price! I love to visit places like Buffalo Exchange whenever I visit the US. Some of my more local/ online favourites are:

5. Don't over think it

When adding to your closet and shopping for new clothes, keep in mind that you will look your best when you feel your best. Make sure to style options that you feel comfortable wearing. I don't discourage you from taking risks, because I'm a big advocate for that. But if you put something on that just doesn't feel right, it probably doesn't look right :P. If you don't trust your gut, take a photo in the change room and snap a shot of yourself in that outfit. If you review that photo and you don't love what you have on, give another piece a try.
