While waiting for one of the shows at fashion week to start, I overheard a conversation behind me that kinda rubbed me the wrong way. "Everyone here dresses so basic" she scuffed to the girl next to her. If you don't know what the term "basic" means, it basically means lacking originality, or like everyone else. I guess the reason this bothered me so much is that I feel that individuals have the right to dress however they want and express themselves through their clothes with whatever they feel they look good in.
I don't think it's fair to say someone lacks originality because they enjoy styles that are currently trending. I mean, isn't that whole point of being a spectator at a fashion show? To preview trends for upcoming seasons to help with future wardrobe choices. Being fashionable can look differently to different people and that's okay. That's really the beauty of it all - there are no set rules. We have every right to be our own kind of beautiful without apologies.
Now that my rant is over, let's talk clothes! I recently stumbled upon an online shop called VIPme that carries everything you could possible need for a complete wardrobe. I love that they aim to empower women to value individual perspective and value inner beauty. When choosing an outfit to wear to the Vancouver Fashion Week Finale show, I knew VIPme would have me covered. I wanted to find something I could wear not only to the event, but throughout the fall season (as you know I'm all about re-wearable fashion). I also knew I wanted to feel comfortable because I would be bouncing back and forth between the runway and backstage.
A sweater dress is the perfect fall staple piece, and this particular one screamed my name. The bodycon fit worked perfectly with the mock neckline and we all know that I'm a sucker for anything white. The jacket is where I really had fun with my look and stepped slightly out of my comfort zone. I love that it's the perfect balance between sporty and feminine. It almost looks like a cross between the ever so popular bomber style jacket and a longer coat. And how fun are the floral sleeves?! I received so many compliments on the jacket, even from a few of the models, which really helped validate my decision to take the plunge with this unique piece.

I wanted to end this post by sharing a beautiful campaign video put together by VIPme that works perfectly with today's theme - be uniquely you! Check it out here.

I always loved fashion for the same reason. Everyone gets to express themselves however they want, and I respect and enjoy it all. Loving this look! Your white dress paired with black tights, boots, and a jacket really make for a great combination.

I completely agree with you, Rina. People can and should dress however they feel most comfortable. Not everyone is trying to be on the cutting edge of fashion, and who cares? Those girls would have rubbed me the wrong way as well. I'm obsessed with that sweater dress!
ReplyDeleteNice post! Everyone has the right to express themselves however they want. Love the jacket!

Your sweater dress x long bomber jacket combo is so cute together Rina!
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame to hear that kind of chatter especially since there are many different types of people who attend these fashion shows not just fashion bloggers or public personalities, but people who are working as press to get content up in real-time, buyers etc who are there for the event and not for a chance to be spotted for cameras because of the clothes they wore on the day. :(

That sweater dress is so cute! I love what you paired it with too. And the sunnies work so perfectly. I LOVE your opinion on the whole basic thing. It's so refreshing to hear that there are still people out there who are kind to one another and realize that everyone is unique. I know I would be absolutely so nervous on what to wear to a fashion show, and then to hear that someone was talking about me or someone else saying everyone looked basic? Man, that's just so mean!! And yeah it totally defeats the point of even having trends haha. I just feel like some people take it too far. Like they are the people that go out of their way to be sooo 'different' and 'original' that then, they don't even end up wearing what they actually like. Anyway, not to talk bad on anyone. I could see how that would be totally annoying hearing that.

I am so with you. The whole point of fashion is so you can showcase your individuality/style. If it happens to be what is trending, then that is cool too! I love your outfit. It is so street style chic!

I think it’s fine to like trends but when you look around these days, almost everyone dresses the same. It’s nice when you see people taking trends & putting their own spin on them. In saying that though, I do love your outfit. The floral sleeves are very unique!
