Birthday Musings

I know I know... I just had to jump on the gold balloon band wagon and you know what, I have no apologies! I think they're super cute and really stand out for photos. Also they really highlight whatever it is you want to highlight with them: a name, an age, an event, you name it! Today, they're helping me mark my birthday. Helloooo 27!

I've been feeling a little ambivalent about turning 27 this year, or having a birthday in general. I know 27 isn't old... it's just older than 26. And I know anyone that is older than 27 reading this is probably shaking their head saying: What are you complaining about?!?!!?

In all honesty this year I really had to shift my mindset from thinking "I'm never going to see 26 again" to "I can't wait to see what 27 has to offer!" I feel at some point, we all reach an age (which can be different for everyone) where we start to dread our birthdays or getting a little older, rather than having the excitement we felt when we were younger.

I still remember how excited I was when I turned 10 (double digits we're a big deal), or when 16 approached and I got my driver's licence. At those moments, I was excited for the opportunities and events that I knew would come with turning a year older. I've realized that birthdays should still feel that way at every age. Another year can bring an endless amount of opportunities and experiences that contribute to who you are as a person. Now all you have to ask yourself - is what kind of person do you want to be?

No matter how old or young we are I think it's important to look forward to what the future may have to offer and work towards any goals that will take you to where you want to be in life. I don't look back to my last 26 years with any regret, but rather learning experiences and moments in time that have contributed to who I am today. At 27, I still have a lot of learning to do, a ton of growing to do and so many more goals to reach! - and that makes me excited!
