Tips for Preventing Blogger Burnout

During my past trip to Europe, I took a much needed 10 day break from the blog and social media to just enjoy being on vacation. I was exhausted and my health wasn't doing so well and I knew I was on the verge of burning out.

I shared a post on blogger burnout a couple of months ago,  and why taking a break is necessary (see here). Today I want to build off of that and share with you some tips on how to avoid blogger burnout. Ever since I came back from Europe, I've made it a priority to have more balance in my life and put my health first, and I feel like a completely different person.

When I started my blog back in 2013, I completely burned out after 1 year, to the point that I didn't want to have anything to do with my blog or social media for more than a year. I was posting 4-5 times a week and felt like I was getting nowhere with my progress. This past May, I could feel myself headed down the same path and I was determined to make some changes before I ended up back in the same place I was 3 years ago.

The following are some strategies I've taken to regain balance and wellness so that I can happily continue down my blogging path and avoid blogger burnout again.

1. Something's gotta give. I found that I was trying to do too much all the time. Between working full-time as a nurse and full-time blogging,  I had no spare time to just be or spend with friends or family. The hubby and I came to a decision that I would scale back my nursing job so that I would have more time to be home, complete my blog work and care for our home. Even though I'm only working 1-2 days less per week, it has made a significant difference in my overall happiness because I don't feel run off my feet. If you find you are being stretched too thin, evaluate your life and find something that you are able to give up and stop over-committing yourself!

2. Make realistic goals and adjust accordingly. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day and your blogging business can't be either. I was constantly comparing myself to bloggers that had more time to blog or that had been blogging for a longer period of time and wishing I was at their level. I was spending unrealistic amounts of time trying to grow my brand and was sleeping at 2 or 3 in the morning every night to try to meet my blogging goals. I have now realized the importance of setting realistic and achievable goals and have let go of the need to have and instant overnight success.

3. Sleep has become my best friend. Like I said, I was sleeping at obscene times for almost a year. I now give myself a set time to turn it all off and go to bed. I'm not going to lie and say this happens every night, but for the most part, my priority is to get lots of rest. I'm a lot more productive when I get a good night's sleep and a lot more pleasant to be around =).

4. Re-establishing priorities. The bottom line is blogging takes up a lot of your time so you need to determine what's important to you and prioritize your time.  My hubby and dog are my number one priority so I make sure I put time aside every week to spend with them.

5. Take care of your health. Since returning from Europe, I've made a priority to go back to meal planning and ensure I'm preparing healthy meals for my family each week. I also make sure to stay active and commit to exercise 5 days a week.  It's important to take care of your health because you can't sustain an unhealthy lifestyle if you plan to blog and be successful long term.

6. Take a break! If you're feeling tired, frustrated or lacking creative juice, take a blogging break. Whether it be a day, a week or a month, take some time away from your blog and come back to it when you're feeling passionate and excited about it again. In the past, I was so religious about posting an X amount of times but sometimes my days or weeks don't allow it and that's okay. There is only so much time in the day and you do your best with the goals you set, but don't beat yourself up if you can't meet them all the time.

There are a lot more little things I'm doing to try to prevent burning out again but I hope this gives a general guide as to some steps you can take to avoid burning out. If you have any other ideas or tips to avoiding burn out, share it in the comments below!

My outfit in tonight's post from VIPshop gives off a Victoria Beckham vibe with the marble buttons and asymmetrical geometric neckline (now that's a mouthful!). I paired it with my pink Gucci bag for a pop of colour and some cat eye sunglasses to keep it classy and sophisticated. I felt like a total Girl Boss in this ensemble and definitely felt like I was kicking blogger burnout's a$$ when wearing it! 11. Thanks for the great reminders Rina ❤ Those are very important points. I myself recently stopped for a week because I was just too busy with work and the baby! Planning for his party was fun though. Sometimes I stop simply because I just don't have that many clothes lol *gasp* I can't believe I just said that when my closet is overflowing... keep being loving and beautiful!

  33. Hi Rina! I totally agree with your post. Being in the medical field and going full time in blogging is grueling most likely because both professions take great amount of your time and commitment. At the end of the day, you really do have to choose or better yet, as you said, set priorities and do some balancing act somewhere along the journey. Thank you for this post, it is helpful and inspiring! ❤️️

  37. Such a great post, babe. Burn out is real in any situation, not just blogging, and it's so important to put our health first. Like you, I am a HUGE fan of sleep (lol) and have made a concerted effort to spend time with my family and friends off the phone, and it's been a great change. Love your blog and hope you continue with your content creating journey - it's been so fun to follow! Have a wonderful weekend Rina.

  41. Couldn't agree more with you in this topic. As with many other things in life, taking a break can actually become beneficial in the long run. At the end of the day, we put the most important priorities in our lives first, and keep everything in balance. Great outfit though!

And I loved reading your post! Thank you so much for sharing these tips! You are seriously an inspiration! I can't even imagine how you posted 4-5 times a week being a full time nurse! I find it difficult to post even once a week with a full time job! You have done an amazing job and don't compare yourself with others! I don't know how some blogger make it look so easy! I swear it's not! Have a great day Rina!!

  44. What a great post, advice to live by and remember every day. We are our worst critic and we need to give ourselves a break and a pat on the back for all we have achieved already. I see myself in so many of these situations you describe here, as just started my blog, but I surely wanna make it last and don't wish to burn out after a year because I am sleeping badly and obsessing over the numbers. I love following you and your journey (didn't know you were a nurse, ha!) and I am sure many more successes will follow, dear Rina
